Coagulation and Flocculation are two processes within the water clarification stage. The two processes can be summarized as a stage in which the particles join together into small masses (called flocs or flocs), of which their difference in specific weight in reference to water allows us to generate a decantation or flotation phenomenon.
Coagulation refers to the process of destabilization of suspended particles. These particles maintain a balance of repulsion and attraction forces between them. By breaking this balance, the colloidal particles can approach each other, forming clots.
Flocculation is related to transport phenomena within the medium to make particles come into contact with each other. The flocculant causes the formation of chemical bridges between two or more particles so that a random, spongy and porous three-dimensional structure is formed. This structure, through the growth of coagulated particles, will end up forming a floc large and heavy (or light) enough to be able to decant (or float).
